Amanda persuaded me to join her in the Polar Bear Plunge at Birch Bay on new years day. I HATE to be cold, and cold water is one of my worst terrors, so getting out there in the brutal wind in shorts and bathing suits seemed really crazy. Just crazy enough to be a fun thrill. The biggest fun is doing it with someone you love, and being surrounded by a bunch of fellow giddy crazies. In the midst of the crowd on the icy shore, waiting in the wind for the top of the hour, I realised with appreciation how much heat bodies radiate.
Amanda plunged in all the way in her bikini, and loved it. I was holding the camera and things, so only went in half way. Yes, I wimped. That cold water really bites! But, next year I'll do it right. Maybe it will become our New Year's tradition.
